Innovative solutions for future-oriented research projects

18-04-24, 10:13

We recently performed a Site Acceptance Test (SAT) on a hot-cell suite for one of our customers: the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams (FRIB) at Michigan State University. These hot cells will play a vital part in FRIB’s radiochemistry research into production of exotic radioisotopes for applications ranging from nuclear astrophysics to nuclear medicine.

The hot-cell suite was designed by Von Gahlen and the FRIB team to meet FRIB’s requirements with practicality and future-readiness in mind. The suite consists of three 8-inch and three 3-inch lead-shielded compartments that are interconnected by a conveyor system and complemented with non-corrosive internal hot-cell containments, a shielded airlock, shielded waste compartments, a target connection, and a container docking station for product dispensing.

During the SAT, FRIB and Von Gahlen engineers checked and tested all functional aspects of the hot cells to they met the stringent functional design specifications. Proper installation and operation of all functionalities were met, per FRIB’s high safety-standard requirements.

We enjoyed doing the SAT with FRIB, and would like to thank them for the great cooperation!
